10 Weeks | Mondays at 7:45 PM with Ella Moore
The Cairo Folk class will explore social music and dance forms that developed in the urban areas of Egypt, and that are seen in belly dancer shows all over the world. The movements are engaging and earthy; the tunes are fun and groovy while maintaining rich Egyptian musicality and adding salient socio-political commentary. During this class we will dance through history, starting with the mid-20th century and progressing to today’s urban folk dances. While classes will be primarily movement based, there will be a few lecture portions to ground the dance in context.
Class dates: 9/8, 9/15, 9/22, 9/29, 10/6, 10/13, 10/20, 10/27,* 11/3*, 11/10

Participants should have at least one year of belly dance experience to join this course.
The spring session of classes will include a shaabi choreography course, with an option to perform at the Al Wadi Spring Showcase. This class will be helpful (but not required!) for that spring course.
